Jogeshwari is Pune's Gramdaivata(One who saves the town from the evils). She kills the evils at the boundry itself and does not allow them to enter the town. She was situated outside the Pune in ancient times near Ambil brook. There was no temple either. The Murti is Swaynbhu (If nobody knows the origin).
The Bendres have been performing the pooja for last 300 years or so. Historically, the bendres are well known as a brave and dauntless family.
She
was
Kuladaivata("kuladaiwata
:one who guards and guides the family in need or peril") of Shri
Shivaji Maharaj(The Great Maratha) and
Peshwas.
She is Kuladaivata for many of the Puneites
who
pray her and worship her before starting any good work.
Any
pious or non pious man whenever there is start of the good work bows in
front of her and prays:
sarva
mangal mangalye, shive sarvartha sadhike |
sharanye
trambake gauri, narayani namostute ||
Gist

There
should not be any kind of trouble while I am doing the work. All the things
should go fine. I pray and bow down before you and urge that everything
should go right.
